Title: Some of my work - KLH concepts
Post by: klh mx10 on May 08, 2012, 12:42:35 AM
Hey guys i was asked to show some of my work (arm twisted really hard...lol) so here's a few of my jobs from the last few months. ;D

I'm self taught and just paint on the side for a hobby and also helps pay for my 1/5th obsession! I've been bomarded with work since Nov last year flat out and am actually gonna back right off with it soon as i finish another half dozen or so jobs i've comitted to, just got a bit out of hand to what i can keep up to and basically have no free time anymore and hardly get to drive or work on my own RC's - and i've got several cool projects lined up that i really want to get into.....

So pretty much i'm not taking on anymore work until maybe late this year as i need slow everything down a bit - this year has vanished already!

Monster jobs for Craig, there's acouple in his thread already.

Cheers guys, like any ( well almost) airbrushing there's imperfections, especially the RC shells are tough to paint and so unforgiving if you make even a small mistake, they can be so frustrating and at times often your pretty much painting blind, as everything Is reversed, eg shadows and highlights are normally added last on normal painting so can be built up and adjusted until they're right, on an RC shell they have to go on first which is bloody hard to make them look as you want, add to that a lot of shell manufacturers annoyingly use white overspray film so you can't see what your doing!! EG RCP, MCD, Graphil etc, so bloody dumb to supply a clear paintable shell and then have white film on it so you can't see WTF your doing,,shits me to tears.

Hey mate yep Ozzy is correct, I've been knocking back jobs since April as can't keep up unfortunately ( guys are waiting 6 months + currently which is too long) as only do this part time as a hobby and it's getting way beyond that now so I gotta get it back to where I can manage the workload again! So yeah if your still keen in the new year give me a yell, I'm not booking anymore jobs until next year so I can start again and work my way through one job at a time, instead of having 8 piled up in the shed stressing me out everytime I look at the months of work sitting there...lol.

Hey ambro nah, I'm a Plant Operator for a bulk grain handling company. My olds bought me my 1st airbrush for my 16th birthday, and it's still the same airbrush I use to this day!!!!! I wanted a custom painted MX helmet back in the day and loved Troy Lee's work in the US as he was the hotshot painter in the MX scene, so started mucking about and after 12 months was getting OK at it, painted until I was 19 but it got out of hand as I'd have 3 helmets on the go all the time and would be up until 1am retrying to get them finished for race meetsmetc when I should've been sleeping myself before racing.....

Gave it away as it was interfering with my MX racing at that point when i was serious about it, I'd only painted helmets for myself every few years up until 5 years ago I decided to get back into it when my work went to a 4 day on,4 day off roster, and I had plenty of time to paint as had basically finished racing too, then we had our little one and now times fizzled out again...lol.

No formal training mate, one of my best mates is a spray painter and has helped me out with a lot of info over the years, and these days YouTube etc has plenty of informative vids showing techniques, and just good old trial and error....

Just finished Craig's ski boat "Animal Instincts" today, candy organic green over white, with some subtle metal effect tribal graphics and ghosted "Evolution RC" logo on deck and my logo ghosted on the rear. About 1/4 through his big Cat too, hope to get alot done on that this Mon/Tue.

Mate i take my hat off to you. I just finished cutting out my paint masks last night i even found that to be PITA,

There is no way i can even get close to your detailed work. I will be painting tonight, will be to embarass to even post pictures up of it compared to your work.

What you do is a level that can only described as someone who has passion and loves to paint.

By the way that rooster tail logo looks easy by f*** it's hard to replicate by airbrush
Title: Re: Some of my work - KLH concepts
Post by: klh mx10 on November 09, 2012, 12:32:57 PM
Thanks mate, and yep the Rooster logo takes a bit to replicate in paint for sure, I was a bit suprised even when I did Coz's shell as to what had to be done to recreate it, I think that's why a lot of people struggle to see the dollar value of a custom painted shell until they try themselves and how long shit can take to do, if something looks like its hard to do that's probably because it is! *rofl*

When I first started painting I used to hand draw and cut all my stencils, and hence a reasonable helmet would average 25hours work which I could never charge for...!

In the 10+ years I had away from painting, technology came along way, and now I have all my lettering and most logos computer cut these days, saves alot of time and makes your work a lot more precise and professional looking, combined with freehand techniques it works sweet and pretty much all professional painters have they're own vinyl plotter machines for this purpose. I have to get my stencils done by a 3rd party unfortunately but just can't justify the outlay for a plotter for what is just an on the side hobby for me.

And mate we all had to start somewhere, my early jobs were as crap as anyone's....lol. And there's painters around that can do things I could only dream of, what some people can think up and turn into reality is amazing!

Airbrushing can be a bloody pita ...took me a long time to get used it to especially after being a beater/spray painter for 5 years

I was the best blender in all 3 prestige panel shops I worked in and painter but using 3 fingers compared to 1 finger tip is a whole different ballgame ...just can't get my head around finger movements as I'm used to the flicking of the wrist if you get what I mean

Can take a lot of practice to get good at airbrushing and a wild imagination

I think the next custom paintjob will be on my 1:1 VL ....white pearl base with a shitload of shithot pearls that only show up under the light.....real flames and a few other bits and bobs that I can do with my satajet compared to a little pencil

My poor old faithful little GMC $89 compressor crapped out after about 10 years regular use last week, never once changed the oil in it and still runs great, but it's developed an airleak somewhere in the main control assy with all the on/off switch electrics and i spent an hour on it trying to suss it out, but would've had to dissasemble all the wiring etc and thought nah, just too dangerous f*&*^*% with 240V shit for what it's worth! Def got my money's worth from it!! thumbsup

So got me a new Blackridge 40L tank job that's about twice the tank capacity of my current GMC one, Supercheap had them on an Easter sale from $280 down to $169 , got it all put together and then noticed my damn water/oil seperator won't fit it from my old one as it fouls on the tank, got some fittings today at lunchtime to adapt it out further and should be back in business tonight. This new one should keep up piece of piss now when i'm using my mini gun and a tankfull should go prob an hour of airbrushing, so that'll be good, less noisey air compresor in my earhole while i'm painting.

Here's my old faithful, man this thing has supplied the air to every RC shell and helmet etc i've painted in the last 10 years!

*rofl* *rofl* thought this would throw a few people!

If it wasn't for the compressor issues your hatch would almost be done, i did a couple more hours on it early last week (coming up pretty cool) before the compressor shit itself, also my mates lid i'm trying to finish for Easter as he's in town then and the poor buggers been waiting since Xmas last year - 15 months, it's in clear, just needs rubbing back and final clear coats blown on! Waited even longer than your boat Craig....  eek2

Here's my mate's lid finaly done, simple design, what he wanted - he's an FMXer as does a few demo's each year around the place.

It took me longer to prep the new Troy lee Designs helmet and sand back flat the original graphics than to repaint it in his Punkrock theme!

hey kane quick question (dont wanna start something) but it is illegal to paint a helmet aint it... i know my old man has been asked many time to do them but due to removal of aus standards sticker, softening after painting and modification of a safety device ?

the australian standard sticker is one of many standards on a helmet there is still the snell and dot markings on the inside

Nah all good mate legit question, i've read the MA handbook and there is a section specific to the painting of helmets, and to be honest it's a bit vague..... But you have international Snell and DOT standards which every helmet has stuck to the polystyrene liner inside, and these are stricter than the Australian AS1698 stickers applied to the outside.

I always tape around the AS 1698 stickers, and then clear over it all when finished, although many guys buy helmets direct from the US now which don't even have a 1698, only a complete tosser scruitineer would cause grief, and if you have your rule book you could slap him down with it in 2 sec flat....

If you sprayed straight onto the polystyrene layer inside you could def damage it with solvents, but the outer shell being painted is no different to a fibreglass or kevlar or carbon fibre panel on a race car, boat shell etc, etc.... So yeah the shell can't soften from painting? But if you don't tape thoroughly and get paint /solvents on the polystyrene you could def mess with it's integrity!

I've been asked this long ago on bike forums, and have a think how many V8 touring car, F1, Pro Moto-X and FMXer's, D/H mountainbikers etc etc run custom painted helmets. All of them, if it damaged the helmet they wouldn't be wearing them, and i never had a hassle in all the years i was racing at a State and National level, nor any guys i've painted for.

The MA rule book leaves it's explanation pretty open to interpretation.

Cheers mate, WCC logos all paint.

The candy colours are House of Kolor, Pagan gold on first backed with coarse pearl silver, 2K base coats. Then sealed with an HOK intercoat clear. I sprayed an adhesion promotor on first this time as an experiment to see how the durabilty goes. Most of your hobby paints like Spastix / Faskolor etc etc do candies as well in their polycarbonate ranges, pretty sure RC Buggies are stocking quite a bit now and have candies in their range.

Got this finished today, just a basher shell for my Blitz, thought a Dukes of hazard theme would be cool but once I googled it man it's been done almost as much as Monster Energy theme's...lol.

So I added an Aussie slant to it just for fun, not a lot of effort in this one as it's gonna get hammered.... driven1

Here's a couple more i just got done for Bajadan.

Got one for Ozzy to do and Goddles next, getting through them slowly as usual!

Dan's vintage Kyosho MG shell, this has all Chrome bumpers and grill, lights etc etc to mount up so should look cool assembled - quite a scale kit, surprising amount of hours went into this, the drivers head took over an hour to tape up and paint!

Had to paint some on the outside too as Dan wanted to try get a flat finish on some of the interior area's to add more scale realism.

Remember that Dad build mate ? recently that old &*(% threw it back in my face, so now I'm trying to sneak in and steel it back, all that hard work we did it went to shit. And that Blue was a dead set prick to match here, I gave up and picked a ppg colour off a chart, it looked pretty good on old blue, but I sold it before I finished it.

I'm not taking on any new paintjobs this year but this was one i made an exception for, a tribute helmet of Ivan Erceg who was tragically killed in last years Australian Safari, the bloke was a absolute legend of the WA desert racing community and a true wildman - notorious for partying on the piss etc the night before racing and still being very competitive!

I met him once at Finke and my parents knew him quite well, and a good mate of his here Al Saunders wanted me to do a lid that would fit the man, and wanted it to wear at Finke this year and also the Tri Series this year before it goes on the shelf.

Ivan loved his Heineken's so the top is a beer cap with his desert racing Camel/bike logo in it, base colours are to represent the desert sands and added the Finke track map on the sides plus a tribute to him on the back.

Al was stoked as hell with it and apparantly was well received up at Finke, made it on a couple of desert race teams facebook pages which was cool too. !dirtbike!

Cheers guys, i only met him the once but seemed like super happy friendly dude who was one of those rare tough bastards that could party hard all night and still race just as hard the next day and pick up results! My oldies loved him from all their trips to Finke and was renowned as a larger than life charater in the Desert race community.

RIP Ivan. !dirtbike!

Hey guys just a little bump of this thread to remind crew that I'm not taking on any new paint work this year and at this stage prob none for the start of next year either.

I really appreciate the enquirey's  i'm still getting every month but just to save people wasting their time at this stage I'm confirming I'm not painting for customers, I will definitely make everyone aware once I start up again though. thumbsup

Trying this year to get many of my long term projects completed (RC and other) and have a ton of shells of my own and MX helmet to paint, plus getting plenty of bashing in with the Bimbadeen crew and Riding/racing MX so taking 12-18 months for myself when I have spare time instead of non stop painting which was really starting to burn me out on it - and I don't want to get to the point I hate it.....  *shooting*

Cheers!

But from a metre back it looks ok still so my SC10 has a new shell now and a fresh look reppin' for SSD forum! thumbsup I quite literally just used up left over stencils from previous jobs and made up a quick slap together design, not much time was spent trying to get edges clean as will be a basher shell and the f(*&^% up adhesion promotor made taping a bit difficult to stick down nice like normal to get a clean design edge , prob 4 hours total as rough enough was good enough, think it'll still look alright on the dunes though!

Ha ha I love my pimp gold rims Greg! Originally did them to match my West Coast choppers shell on my Losi XXX SCT but same offset as SC10 hence why I added the little bit of candy gold to the "barwork" and break up line.

Just a set of chrome Axial EXO rims sprayed in gold duplicolour from Supercheap, it hangs onto the plastic SCT rims really well - I've done 3 sets now and they're all lasting really well! thumbsup

Thanks Tommy - I have thought about it and heaps of people have told me the same including blokes at my work, but the truth is when the economy drops stuff like this that is non essential is the first thing to dry up..... I work for a large grain handling company and figure primary industry is the safer bet to stick with, and I have a great roster - 75% of the time my job is pretty good (25% it's pure shit....lol) and the money's good for the location I live in and easy shift roster etc....

If I ever win lotto or have a decent winfall and am cruising in life would be nice to make KLHconcepts a legit deal but for now it's just a creative hobby on the side and I'm happy to keep it that way.

Truth is the only reason I started painting was I wanted to make my own shit look cool and was bugger all people around doing it, so at 16 decided to have a crack and taught myself after my parents got me my first Iwata HP-C for my 16th birthday - and it's still the same f*&*^*% airbrush I use today at 37 years of age! Iwata gear is GOOD! 1lma00!

Pumped out quite some quantity of work the last month by my usual standards....

f(*&^% my knee racing Moto-X only a few days into my holidays so had a week on crutches able to do f*** all, pissed off was an understatement so decided to smash into some paint for myself and others that has been waiting as about all I could kinda do!

Have almost finished my new Blitz shell for my speed runs but am waiting on some stencils to complete it before I post up pics - here's some early stages of taping without giving too much away, lol :

Jonno wanted to paint a new proline shell for his 8ight buggy, started off I offered to spray some adhesion promotor on it before he painted it, then I said f*** it if only a simple design i'll tape it up for ya and you can spray it, then went f*** it again - i'll paint it mate as only a simple job and I can't do f*** all else atm.......

Well Jonno is the guy in the Bimbadeen Crew who is always the first to offer his TX to some mates kid or someone new to have a drive of his RC's at a bash, which is bloody good of him, so without telling him I decided to add alot more detail into his scheme and pimp it out with sweet colours too, ghosted tru fire in a custom candy lime mix, over HOK passion pearl which is the sweetest purple in the flesh! Also added some drop shadows to the design and some hex detail faded into the deal to give it some more life.

Now this would have to be the most random thing I've ever painted!

My Nan wanted to get my Daughter a little wheelbarrow for her 4th birthday, but wanted me to paint something on it for her - Chloe love's dinosaur's so I decided on the Dinosaur train characters Buddy and Tiny....well it started off a total f*** up.... *crybaby*

I removed the plastic tub, cleaned it right up and sprayed down some adhesion promotor which works great on the RC shells, I then printed off pics of the characters, traced them onto signmask on my light table and hand cut the lot - took bloody ages. I went to stick the first of the stencils on and the f*&*^*% adhesion promotor just peeled straight off in a big chunk, I nearly died....... her birthday was only a few days away but we were leaving for Perth so had to be ready early so my Nan could give it to her before we went!

I used my orbital automotive sander to strip it all down again and rough the plastic up this time, thank f*** it worked and stuck well the 2nd time!

Was pretty special to paint this for both my 86 y.o. Nan and my girl's 4th birthday, was a hit with both of them so super stoked. thumbsup

Cheers for the kind words guys, here's another i got done for my new TLR SCTE that i still havn't run yet, pics can never do the candy red justice, best colour! Hard to tell in the pics but edges of red are faded into candy brandywine, with a fine candy gold pinstripe.

A little bit of ghosted tru fire and unfortunately the white sections f*&*^*% bled the brandywine through after i final backed all the inside with black, candy's and light colours are a b**** on these reverse painted RC shells, they don't bleed through when the colours are layed down, mostly when the final backing coat is done, so now the white has faded pinky purple section, pissed off but will still look nice in the sun.

Yeah it actually got smoother looking after a week or so, crazy it keep coming through more as it completely dried out over a few days!

In the future i'm going to have to double tape when using the candy's with white etc, pita! Or may experiment with using an intercoat clear in between to see if it'll seal it in and stops the next coats "melting" it again and bleeding through.

Yeah i've seen the pics on their FB page, gotta say though they'd be better off concentrating on getting customer orders sent instead, i've been f(*&^% around bigtime and so has Pat lately with orders, they've  taken 2 1/2 months to get me the E - conversion for my new truggy which is outrageous, could of had it in a week from Amain..... Final straw was they said it was going Startrack Express yesterday, head down the depot this morning to get it and nothing, call up and get "oh we couldn't find a price on one item so it's still here"........

I yelled a bit down the phone..... Told 'em what a f*^*%* joke and hung up. Got an email notifcation not long after showing status as sent.

Will be my last order off them for some time and i've spent heaps there the last 18months, the CS has been f(*&^% during their move the last coupla months!

f*&*^*% awesome mate, I think you've inspired me to pull out the iwata airbrush kit that the missus bought for me. Any good resources you can point me to for beginners.

Honestly mate the only advice i can give is practice your ass off and try to really think about what steps you need to do to achieve a look your chasing, which gets easier with time. And mate just google and youtube searches are the best.

When i tried to learn tru fire i bought a $40 custom paint book and still didn't understand the techique and just wasn't happening, youtube search found a super basic quick tutorial under 2 minutes and within a week had it sussed......

Hey mate the mesh is done simply using drywall tape from Bunnings, secret shared..... thumbsup

The chequer plate was done with a stencil made up from my local sticker shop, but still a massive PITA to do so small, ha ha.

You can achieve plenty of cool effects just using stuff laying around the house or shed, just gotta think outside the box.

I hav'nt been doing customer jobs for some time now, just catching up on my own projects for the time being and a couple for local mates, may start taking small amounts of work again later this year.

I was going to ask where you got your stickers / stencils. I was thinking of getting a second hand vinyl cutter, would make things a whole lot easier.

Yeah i've thought about it too but still gotta get and learn how to use all the programs properly etc, atm i have a pretty good relationship going with the local sticker shop so that's worked well most of the time over the last several years.

Pretty chuffed picked up Concourse at Challenge Cup for the 2nd year in a row, woohoo! headbang

The Kal club organised a couple of the local good motocrossers to judge concourse and i've never seen two blokes go over the paintjobs so closely, they were even running their fingers across the shells to see wether it was paint or stickers, how it should be done! thumbsup

Not like the f*&*^*% joke that was Concourse at the State titles the week before where they asked the Coffee van lady to judge the cars at the last second! That was really, really piss poor..... &pee(

Here's the first job i did with the new airbrush - i LOVE my new Iwata!

Was an 18th present a couple of months ago for a young fella i've known in the MX club since he was a little kid, i'm basically not taking on any work but promised his mum last year i'd paint one for his 18th!

I mixed a custom candy green and it's the best green i've ever made, i have no direct sunlight pics to show it off unfortunately, but put a few pics of the peak below under different angles of fluro lights to try show the flip in it!

I've signed a 12month contract with Hanna from Ausrab Industries to race here using their products with some help, so was perfect as he stocks Tekno and was what i'm racing anyway! Sold off my older cars and got the awesome new .3 kits, so went with Ausrabs colours (with my owns twist) for my race cars.

Have done very little painting since the young bloke arrived 6 months ago but did a rush job fresh shell for my Tekno E buggy using a mix of Tamiya cans and airbrushing before heading to Kalgoorlie for round 1 of the Challenge Cup series, the last 2 years I've won concourse in the SCT class up there, but with no SCT class this year i concentrated on EP8.....

And won Concourse buggy from over 60 entered! Stoked as f*** as was a little rough in the edgework due to me pushing it through in one day to get it done but the colours popped like f*** together. thumbsup  Had plenty of guys thinking it was a wrap so that's a pretty good compliment i guess.

Cherry on the pie was i raced my best to date and made the A main and finished 6th overall with some really competitive lap times against the gun Perth drivers i can't normally get close to, this time i had some really good battles with the regular front runners which was awesome, myself and 5th place finished 2 mains under 2 sec apart after 7 mins!
